“The explaining is the point,
not the afterthought.”

Montgomery Advisory started because of a conversation that kept repeating itself.

Someone would slide a stack of statements across the table and say, almost apologetically, that they didn't really understand any of it. They weren't careless — they were building something real. No one had ever sat down and explained what their own numbers were saying.

That happened too many times to keep treating it as an exception. So we built a practice around the opposite experience, where the explaining is the point.

Teaching shaped that. Standing in front of a classroom of accounting students humbles you quickly: if someone doesn't understand you, the problem is almost never the person — it's the way it was explained. We bring that same assumption into every client meeting. If a report leaves you confused, the report has failed you, not the other way around.

What we've come to believe, after years of both classrooms and client work, is that financial clarity is really about confidence. When you understand your margins, your cash position, and what your filings actually mean, you stop guessing. You negotiate differently. You hire at the right moment instead of the hopeful one. You sleep better.

So no, we won't hand you a report and disappear. We'll go through it together, in plain language, until it's yours. That's the whole idea.

The Meaning Behind Montgomery Advisory

A name rooted inshared values.

Montgomery Advisory carries a meaning that is deeply personal to its founder. The company was named in honor of Dr. Fatima Douglas’s mother, with whom she shared a passion for financial security and the belief that people should have greater understanding and confidence when making decisions about their financial lives.

That shared perspective continues to influence the firm today. Montgomery Advisory was built around the idea that financial information should not simply be prepared or presented—it should be understood. Whether helping a business owner strengthen financial operations, an individual navigate tax matters, or a prospective buyer better understand financial readiness, the goal remains the same: provide clarity that helps people make informed decisions.

The name Montgomery Advisory therefore represents more than a business. It reflects a legacy of shared values and a commitment to helping others build stronger financial foundations.

What I Care About

Clarity that supportsbetter decisions.

My work has always centered on helping people understand what their financial information is actually telling them. I am especially passionate about financial clarity, internal audit and internal controls, fraud prevention, and helping business owners build stronger financial foundations.

That same perspective also carries into major personal and business decisions. Whether someone is preparing to purchase a home, evaluating commercial real estate, strengthening business operations, or simply trying to understand their numbers with greater confidence, I believe good decisions begin with clear, reliable financial information.

My goal is not simply to prepare reports or complete transactions. It is to help people understand the information in front of them, identify risks and opportunities, and make better-informed decisions.

Our Position

We're advisors and educators first — the paperwork follows the understanding.

What you canexpect from us

Education before transactions
We would rather you leave a meeting understanding your numbers than leave with a folder you never open. Teaching is the work.
Understanding before decisions
No one should sign, file, or restructure anything they can't explain in their own words. We slow down until the picture is clear.
Relationships before revenue
We take on fewer clients on purpose. If we're not the right fit, we'll say so early and point you somewhere better.
Guidance that outlasts the season
Tax season ends. Your business doesn't. The systems we build are meant to still be working for you three years from now.

Experience

Experience that shapesevery engagement

Accounting, financial management, business advisory, internal audit and controls, taxation, and real estate guidance — one body of experience, which is why the advice connects instead of arriving in pieces.

Accounting & financial management
Years of hands-on accounting, reporting, and month-to-month financial oversight — the work behind statements that actually mean something.
Business advisory & operations
Helping owners tighten how the work gets done: handoffs, approvals, documentation, and the operational habits that hold up as a team grows.
Internal audit, controls & risk
Assessing risks, evaluating control design, testing whether controls operate as intended, and strengthening processes so accountability is built into everyday operations rather than bolted on after a problem.
Taxation
Individual and business returns, quarterly estimates, and planning — prepared in-house by IRS PTIN-registered preparers.
Business formation
Walking founders through entity choice, structure, and the paperwork that quietly shapes their taxes and liability for years.
Real estate & personal financial readiness
Preparing clients financially before major decisions — most often getting the numbers in shape ahead of buying a home.

A Maryland advisory and financial management firm serving entrepreneurs, startups, nonprofits, and small businesses. Teaching accounting at the college level is part of that story too — it's where the habit of explaining clearly came from.

If this sounds like the kind of working relationship you've been looking for, we'd be glad to hear what you're building.
